Tsunami is the most destructive natural phenomenon in the world. Tsunami waves can travel at speeds of up to 800 km/h, much faster than one person can run. This makes tsunamis a serious threat to coastal areas throughout the world.

When an earthquake occurs under the sea, the energy released can create waves that grow larger as they approach the coast. These waves are not only high but also have enormous energy, capable of destroying buildings and infrastructure in their path. The main difference between ordinary ocean waves and tsunamis lies in the way these waves form and propagate. Ocean waves are usually generated by wind and have short wavelengths, while tsunamis have very long wavelengths, can reach hundreds of kilometers. The frequency and strength of tsunamis can vary greatly, depending on the geological location and seismic activity in an area. The Pacific Ocean, known as the “Ring of Fire,” is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Countries such as Japan, Indonesia and Chile often experience destructive tsunamis due to tectonic activity. In recent years, the risk of tsunamis has increased due to climate change, which could trigger more underwater landslides due to melting ice and rising sea levels.

The importance of research on tsunamis cannot be ignored. Scientists continue to study tsunami patterns and causes to formulate more accurate predictive models. With better understanding, we can improve warning systems and mitigation techniques to protect life and property.
